What is MATT?

MATT stands for the Monroe Assistive Technology Team.  The MATT team is comprised of a Speech/Language Pathologist, Physical Therapist, and Occupational Therapy Assistant. All members have extensive training in Assistive Technology. Expertise includes alternative/augmentative communication, computer access, fine motor, gross motor, seating and mobility. The team assesses all students with disabilities. This includes but is not restricted to students with:

  • Specific Learning Disabilities

  • Physical Impairments

  • Hearing Impairment, Visually Impairment

  • Fine motor/ gross motor problems

  • Speech/Language Impairment

  • Autism

  • Trainable and Educable Mentally Handicapped

  • Profoundly Handicapped

  • Traumatic Brain Injured

  • Other Health Impaired

Our team is comprised of Sharon Day- SLP, Marion Dell- PT, and Tracey Smith- COTA/L. Sharon’s background includes a Masters degree in Speech/Language Pathology. She additionally worked with Hearing Impaired students for 10 years before coming to the Keys. She has been in the District since 1988 working as both a Speech/Language Pathologist and Assistive Technology Specialist. Assistive Technology has truly become a passion for her with all the challenges and ever-changing technology for our ESE and General Education population. She is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association, the Florida Speech and Hearing Association and the Council for Exceptional Children. Additionally, Sharon holds an ATP- Assistive Technology Practitioner credentialed through the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America.

Marion is a licensed Physical Therapist with 20 years of experience in the clinical and school setting. She has been on the MATT team since 1999 and continues to stay apprised of all new research and equipment in the mobility area. Marion is a full time Physical Therapist for the Monroe County School District along with being an Assistive Technology Specialist. She is an active member on the Partners in Transition and Conch Connect. She contributes a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the team in many areas. Marion’s passion is in the area of mobility, augmentative communication and making accommodations for students transitioning into the job market.

Tracey Smith is a COTA/L, and provides expertise with occupational therapy. She has been with the Monroe County School District since 1998 and on the Assistive Technology Team since 2000. Tracey additionally has experience in the clinical and school setting. She is constantly researching new technology for our ESE students and shares her knowledge with the team, therapists, and teachers on a daily basis. Tracey has a full time caseload in the Keys schools and provides the AT team one day per week. Tracey’s expertise is in the area of computer access, fine motor as well as low/mid technology solutions for our students.

Together, the team provides Professional Development and training for teachers both General Education and ESE. Student assessments and follow through are done by the team from Key West to Key Largo. The AT team has a Teacher Training lab in Key West. This is used for not only Professional Development but also for Teacher make and take. The lab has all needed materials to make a variety of items for the classroom. Additionally, computers are accessible with a multitude of software for teacher use. Videos, manuals and a variety of resources are available for teachers upon request or on designated Lab days, which are after school.
